<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Gill Sans MT,serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">In Santa Barbara, California, 20 miles from the sea, lies the 250-hectare winery Hilliard Bruce, which is surrounded by the Santa Rita Hills. The big bronze gateway opens for appointed visitors only. Past many rosaries and herb gardens, the palm-lined driveway leads to the house of the couple John Hilliard and Christine Bruce, an in Tuscan-style built villa with adjacent horse stables. Since 2004, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are cultivated here – in fact, personally by John and Christine. </span></span></p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Gill Sans MT,serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>MyStylery:</strong> John, you led the domestic shipyards from Houston for ages, later engaging in the art scene. What caused a Texan tradesman to grow wine in California?<br />
<strong>John Hilliard:</strong> I had a serious kidney disease, including two kidney transplantations and chemotherapies. I am a fighter, I survived, and I knew, that this was not everything my life had to offer. And as Christine and I had always been passionate gardeners, the idea of growing an own winery arose. At first the plan was Texas…<br />

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Gill Sans MT,serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>MS:</strong> … not the classic area for winegrowing really…<br />
<strong>JH:</strong> Exactly. When we came here for the first time, we instantly knew that this was the right place. We benefitted from the cool breeze of the pacific. The grapes can be cooled naturally over night and, by the way, are only harvested in the early morning hours and after sunset to keep the aroma of the grapes during the process.</span></span></p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Gill Sans MT,serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>MS:</strong> Christine and you, both of you are certificated gardeners and also created the parks and orchards. But isn’t winegrowing on a new level?<br />
<strong>JH:</strong> Especially in a country, where everything is “organic”. We do not take stock in these biodynamical methods. We pit on sustainability and traditional agriculture.<br />
</span></span></p>
<div id="attachment_150" style="width: 641px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-150" class="wp-image-150" src="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/John-Christine-monkey-pic.jpg" alt="John &amp; Christine monkey pic" width="631" height="800" srcset="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/John-Christine-monkey-pic.jpg 710w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/John-Christine-monkey-pic-237x300.jpg 237w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/John-Christine-monkey-pic-473x600.jpg 473w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/John-Christine-monkey-pic-118x150.jpg 118w" sizes="(max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px" /><p id="caption-attachment-150" class="wp-caption-text">John and Christine infront of the painting &#8220;Monkey&#8221; by the American artist Donald Roller Wilson*</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Gill Sans MT,serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>MS: </strong>What does that mean?<br />
<strong>JH:</strong> We bear in mind the ecological principals, including organisms in their environment. Our winery is completely solar-powered. A specific aquifer waters the vines to save water. We comply the “SIP Certified Standards”, an independent control system, which is incentive for us. And we only grow 50 hectares of wine, so that we can keep the project small and the quality high. </span></span></p>
<div id="attachment_134" style="width: 460px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-134" class="wp-image-134" src="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/2014-09-15-18.01.29_resized-576x1024.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="800" srcset="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/2014-09-15-18.01.29_resized-576x1024.jpg 576w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/2014-09-15-18.01.29_resized-169x300.jpg 169w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/2014-09-15-18.01.29_resized-338x600.jpg 338w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/2014-09-15-18.01.29_resized-84x150.jpg 84w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/2014-09-15-18.01.29_resized.jpg 1377w" sizes="(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px" /><p id="caption-attachment-134" class="wp-caption-text">Christine&#8217;s piano with a view into the rose garden</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Gill Sans MT,serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Christine Bruce sits down with us, grey-bluish paint on hands and check shirt.</span></span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Gill Sans MT,serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>CB:</strong> Sorry, I just had to paint a table for the kitchen.<br />
<strong>JH:</strong> Christine has an incredible sense for interior. She arranged the house and the hall for the winetastings and chose colors and fabrics. The horse stables were also built to her specifications.</span></span></p>
<div id="attachment_228" style="width: 660px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-228" class="wp-image-228 size-large" src="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/2014-10-15-17.22.29-1024x552.jpg" alt="In dieser von xxx designten Halle (der auch schon für Bill Gates und Steve Jobs baute), wird der Wein produziert." width="650" height="350" srcset="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/2014-10-15-17.22.29-1024x552.jpg 1024w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/2014-10-15-17.22.29-300x161.jpg 300w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/2014-10-15-17.22.29-150x80.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /><p id="caption-attachment-228" class="wp-caption-text">In this newly built hall the wine of Hilliard Bruce is produced</p></div>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Gill Sans MT,serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>MS:</strong> Christine, you studied music and were a successful keyboard player in R&amp;B bands. An unusual career for someone who is a horse breeder and vintner <span id="result_box" class="short_text" lang="en" tabindex="-1"></span>today.<br />
<strong>CB:</strong> I grew up in the countryside and loved playing in the garden since I was a child. When I could not see anything at night, I took a lamp and placed it next to the patch. For me, there is nothing better than the smell of fresh mint, the living nature and to work with my hands.<br />
<strong>JH:</strong> We are here now and happy. Our life motto comes from the german-american author Robert Green Ingersoll, which is also printed on all our wine labels: “Happiness is the only good. The time to be happy is now. The place to be happy is here. The way to be happy is to make others so.”  <span style="font-size: 10pt;"><strong>BvH</strong></span></span></span></p>

<p>I love France! The language and culture, and not to forget the food! And when the best friends invite you for a weekend to France into the valley of the Loire to celebrate a special wedding day, then this is très chic and lets my heart leap with joy. Especially now in autumn when the nature turns into a blaze of color and the sun still caters for warm moments under blue sky.</p>
<div id="attachment_3817" style="width: 544px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3817" class="wp-image-3817" src="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC3240.jpg" alt="_DSC3240" width="534" height="800" srcset="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC3240.jpg 683w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC3240-200x300.jpg 200w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC3240-400x600.jpg 400w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC3240-100x150.jpg 100w" sizes="(max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px" /><p id="caption-attachment-3817" class="wp-caption-text">Hotelier-couple Maria and Victor Orsenne, the &#8216;Chef de cuisine&#8217;*</p></div>
<p>About two hours by car in the southwest from Paris lies the Manoir de Contres, a family-run, down-to-earth hotel in a 200 years old, charming manor that is owned by Victor Orsenne and his wife Marie – the sister of my friend and host – and is ideally the trailhead for diverse trips into the cultural assets and small, idyllic places along the countryside of the Loire.</p>
<div id="attachment_3809" style="width: 660px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3809" class="wp-image-3809 size-large" src="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/MyStylery_Manoir_de_Contres__-Chateau-Vancay-26-1024x576.jpg" alt="MyStylery_Manoir_de_Contres_&amp;_ Chateau Vancay (26)" width="650" height="366" srcset="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/MyStylery_Manoir_de_Contres__-Chateau-Vancay-26-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/MyStylery_Manoir_de_Contres__-Chateau-Vancay-26-533x300.jpg 533w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/MyStylery_Manoir_de_Contres__-Chateau-Vancay-26-800x450.jpg 800w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/MyStylery_Manoir_de_Contres__-Chateau-Vancay-26-150x84.jpg 150w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/MyStylery_Manoir_de_Contres__-Chateau-Vancay-26.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /><p id="caption-attachment-3809" class="wp-caption-text">The terrace in the garden, beautiful for a breakfast in the morning sun, in the summer there’ll be BBQ for lunch, in the evening with an aperitif</p></div>
<p>Someone lucky starts the day with a coffee in the sun on the wonderful terrace of the Manoir de Contres. And listens to the small anecdotes, which Victor, the patron, has to tell, whilst enjoying homemade marmalade, delicious croissants and fresh fruits: how he, a French, got to know Maria, a native of Hamburg, in a hotel management school in the Swiss Lausanne. How both of them led two small boutique-hotels in Paris and someday asked themselves, whether life offers something new. When the manor in the little town Contres, which was previously inhabited, was on offer; the Orsennes didn’t hesitate long, renovated all eight rooms. Adieu metropolis, bonjour country life. This happened four years ago and was a good decision.</p>
<div id="attachment_3818" style="width: 660px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3818" class="wp-image-3818 size-large" src="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/00437-1024x683.jpg" alt="00437" width="650" height="434" srcset="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/00437-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/00437-450x300.jpg 450w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/00437-800x534.jpg 800w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/00437-150x100.jpg 150w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/00437.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /><p id="caption-attachment-3818" class="wp-caption-text">Whilst the fire place crackles, I look at the for the region typical, colorful ceiling paintings*</p></div>
<p>Because the Val de Loire in the heart of France is a popular travel-region, not only for gourmets and wine lovers, but also for fans of the French cuisine. More than 300 castles and fortresses – built by emperors, kings and the French aristocracy from different epochs – of which about 100 can still be visited, string together, like pearls on a cord.</p>
<div id="attachment_3811" style="width: 660px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3811" class="wp-image-3811 size-large" src="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/MyStylery_Manoir_de_Contres__-Chateau-Vancay-28-1024x576.jpg" alt="MyStylery_Manoir_de_Contres_&amp;_ Chateau Vancay (28)" width="650" height="366" srcset="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/MyStylery_Manoir_de_Contres__-Chateau-Vancay-28-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/MyStylery_Manoir_de_Contres__-Chateau-Vancay-28-533x300.jpg 533w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/MyStylery_Manoir_de_Contres__-Chateau-Vancay-28-800x450.jpg 800w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/MyStylery_Manoir_de_Contres__-Chateau-Vancay-28-150x84.jpg 150w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/MyStylery_Manoir_de_Contres__-Chateau-Vancay-28.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /><p id="caption-attachment-3811" class="wp-caption-text">The last summer flowers from the hotel’s internal park</p></div>
<p>At this time of the year the endless columns of bus-tourists already left, one has the region mostly for oneself. Famous is the Château de Chambord, former hunting castle of Louis XIV, which is the biggest château at the Loire under the renaissance castles with its 400 rooms, crenellation and towers on the largest park-area Europe’s with 5.440 hectares. But there’re also some real insider tips, in which one can amble along the halls just by oneself and seems to hear the haunting castle ghost giggling behind the screen. For example the Valençay or the castle Cheverny (more soon). Indeed there’s a numerous amount of castles that are lead and inhabited by aristocratic families since generations.</p>
<div id="attachment_3822" style="width: 660px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3822" class="wp-image-3822 size-large" src="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC2513-1024x683.jpg" alt="_DSC2513" width="650" height="434" srcset="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC2513-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC2513-450x300.jpg 450w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC2513-800x534.jpg 800w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC2513-150x100.jpg 150w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC2513.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /><p id="caption-attachment-3822" class="wp-caption-text">View on the one-hectare big park with its old tree population*</p></div>
<p>In order to get not sick of all the castles I recommend to narrow down the choice to a couple of castles – otherwise you’ll end up with a real castle-marathon: it’s best to focus on one to two castles per day. Then in the evening you’ll still be able to assign the castles that you saw during the day.</p>
<div id="attachment_3819" style="width: 660px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3819" class="wp-image-3819 size-large" src="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC2859-1024x683.jpg" alt="_DSC2859" width="650" height="434" srcset="https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC2859-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC2859-450x300.jpg 450w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC2859-800x534.jpg 800w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC2859-150x100.jpg 150w, https://mystylery.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC2859.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /><p id="caption-attachment-3819" class="wp-caption-text">The restaurant of the Manoir de Contres, in which one can excellently dine*</p></div>
<p>Apropos evening: Victor, the Maître of the Manoir is a gifted cook and his magic arts at the stove are not only reserved for this hotel guests. We got spoiled by a salad of green beans and crayfish tails, followed by scallops with rose pepper, veal medallions in clear estragon sauce and the delicious potato gratin, which I ate. In conclusion goat cheese from the Loire valley and ‘Framboisier du Manoir’ out of white chocolate mousse with fresh raspberries. Accompanied by wonderful wines from the in-house, comprehensive cellar of the Manoir de Contres and its perfect, attentive service, which couldn’t be better even in four- or five-start-hotels: Savoir vivre! What else could you wish for? <span style="font-size: 10pt;"><strong>BvH</strong></span></p>

<h2><span style="color: #ff6600;">Exclusive tips by Maria Orsenne &#8230;</span></h2>
<p>&#8230; for a perfect day in and around Contres. How about a trip to the famous limestone caves, the so called &#8216;caves-troglodytiques&#8217;, in which different wineries store their wines, for example the winery <a href="http://www.monmousseau.com/en/" target="_blank"> Monmousseau</a> with its wonderful Crémants near <a href="http://www.chenonceau.com/" target="_blank">Château de Chenonceau</a>. The wine tastings take place inside the illuminated rock caves.</p>

<p>A friendly lunch address is the <a href="http://lestroismarchands.fr" target="_blank">&#8216;Les Trois Marchands&#8217;</a> in Cour-Cheverny. From there you can drive onwards to the chocolate manufactory Max Vouché in Bracieux (near Chambord). On the weekend it’s worth to visit the <a href="http://www.vins-vouvray.com/archives/marche-amboise.php" target="_blank">Sunday market in Amboise</a> between 8 am and 1.30 pm directly at the shore of the Loire with up to 200 market stands. <p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Gill Sans MT,serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">In Santa Barbara, California, 20 miles from the sea, lies the 101- acre winery Hilliard-Bruce, which is surrounded by the Santa Rita Hills. The big bronze gateway opens for appointed visitors only. Past many rosaries and herb gardens, the palm-lined driveway leads to the house of the couple John Hilliard and Christine Bruce, an in Tuscan-style built villa with adjacent horse stables. Since 2004, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are cultivated here – in fact, personally by John and Christine.</span></span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Gill Sans MT,serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>MyStylery: </strong>John, you led the domestic shipyards from Houston for ages, later engaging in the art scene. What caused a Texan tradesman to grow wine in California?<strong><br />
John Hilliard: </strong>I had a serious kidney disease, including two kidney transplantations and chemotherapies. I am a fighter, I survived, and I knew, that this was not everything my life had to offer. And as Christine and I had always been passionate gardeners, the idea of growing an own winery arose. At first the plan was Texas…<strong><br />
MS: </strong>… not the classic area for winegrowing really…<strong><br />
JH: </strong>Exactly. When we came here for the first time, we instantly knew that this was the right place. We benefitted from the cool breeze of the pacific. The grapes can be cooled naturally overnight and, by the way, are only harvested in the early morning hours and after sunset to keep the aroma of the grapes during the process. </span></span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Gill Sans MT,serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>MS: </strong>Christine and you, both of you are certificated gardeners and also created the parks and orchards. But isn’t winegrowing on a new level?<strong><br />
JH: </strong>Especially in a country, where everything is “organic”. We do not take stock in these biodynamical methods. We pit on sustainability and traditional agriculture.<strong><br />
MS: </strong>What does that mean?<strong><br />
JH: </strong>We bear in mind the ecological principals, including organisms in their environment. Our winery is completely solar-powered. A specific aquifer waters the vines to save water. We comply the “SIP Certified Standards”, an independent control system, which is incentive for us. And we only grow 21 acres of wine, so that we can keep the project small and the quality high. </span></span></p>

<strong>CB:</strong> Sorry, I just had to paint a table for the kitchen.<br />
<strong>JH:</strong> Christine has an incredible sense for Interior. She arranged the house and the hall for the winetastings and chose colors and fabrics. The horse stables were also built to her specifications.</p>
