Even the colorful entrance of the World Family Shop has something seductive

Since my first visit to the hippy market of Las Dalias I’m in love with the colorful creations of the Spanish label World Family. Shoes, bags, clothes – everything comes in gorgeous colors, elaborately embroidered and decorated. It’s great that the entire World Family Collection is now under one roof – including beautiful home accessories and small furniture for our home. If you drive the street 733 towards San Juan, the World Family shop is at the height of kilometer 17, right next to Can Curune. Then it’s about either passing the accelerator and proceeding quickly – or getting out your credit card and shop.

World Family is actually a family business behind Alok and Merel, standing with their children and grandmother Joke. Alok, who came in the mid-90s from Barcelona to Ibiza, where he met Merel, a former Dutch model, both looking for a new beginning. They made a tepee, where they lived together with their children coming from previous relationships and the three common as patchwork family.

Their first findings, which they had discovered on a trip to Morocco, they were selling on the beach of Benirras directly from the back of their rickety Mercedes transporter. Later, they managed to get a stand at the famous hippy market of Las Dalias – that was a breakthrough for their current success with a total of three stores in Ibiza and a showroom in Barcelona.

In spite of the demand, each part of the World Family Collection is produced 100% handmade, designed by Merel, lovingly decorated with Indian borders and Moroccan beads. And why have Alok and Merel called their label “World Family”? “Because we all have different backgrounds with own traditions, customs and habits. But we all have in common, that we share this beautiful planet called earth.” BvH

Santa Gertrudis is one of my favorite places in Ibiza. Even if the small town in the center of the island is not a secret anymore, it draws me there every time when I’m on the Balearic island. There you can perfectly combine culinary and shopping in a pleasant atmosphere. Right next to the hustle and bustle marketplace with its many cafes and bars you’ll find the shop “Es Cucons La Tienda”. Outside I am already lured by the just so trendy, embroidered bast bag beside to XXL-lanterns, which would immerse my terrace in an atmospheric light. Let’s shop!

I pass the turquoise shop door and find myself in a unique treasure trove again: Here not only fashion for women is offered – like sweet bikinis by Giulala Bruna, embroidered tunics, beach dresses, scarves, straw hats and espadrilles – but also beautiful ceramic, useful items for household, inspiring home-decoration and scented candles.

These colorful glasses would be also great on my terrace in Berlin – but do they fit into my suitcase?

Now I would like at least a small country house in Ibiza, to decorate all these nice items!

Okay, I also take the plates! By the way, can I pay here by credit card?

Men do not have to stay outside, because for them there is an own little department with casual menswear called the “Es Cucons La Tienda” – as trendy checked shirts – of denim and linen. The team of “Es Cucons La Tienda”, which, incidentally, also operates the hotel of the same name “Es Cucons”, offers toys as well as sweet clothes for the kids. Of course, everything in Ibiza-style. Silvia Gattin in her colorful Ethno-Style: “Mass production and ‘made in China’ are out of the question for me. My way leads towards limited collections, unique pieces and a sustainable production.”

Some people may say, Facebook or Instagram are shallow platforms where nothing but hollow ‘wisdom-phrases’ and narcissistic selfies are being posted. As a matter of fact I keep in contact with many of my social-media-friends. Just recently I met with designer Silvia Gattin, whose positive pictures and colorful ethno-chic had attracted my attention on Instagram. I visited the creative Austrian with Croatian-Italian roots in her eclectic apartment in the 19th district. There, where Vienna has its greenest spots and where Silvia Gattin – by the way the emphasis of her last name lies on the second syllable – has already spend her childhood. I am vigorously greeted by Santo, a six-months-old terrier-schnauzer mix, and a very sincere Silvia, who I meet for the first time in real life.

MyStylery: How did you get the dog?
Silvia Gattin: Four months ago a friend called and told me she had a dog for me, which had been mistreated by his former owner. I have always wished for a little mongrel dog and longed to save a little one. Now I have Santo my ‘partner in crime’ and with him a life at the dog training place at the puppy training.

MS: With your boho- and ethno-inspired creations you have found a niche and also address the spoiled VIP-clientele. How did that happen?
SG: During Vienna Fashion Night last summer I had a Pop up Store, suddenly Poppy Delevigne came in, saw my Mirror-Clutch and posted it on Instagram. Within two hours my bag was sold out completely and I had 500 more followers on Instagram.

MS: How does a studied business economist become a designer of oriental like Hippie-Chic?
SG: Well by detours and my passion for travelling. I have always been interested in fabrics, fashion and design. After my dry business administration studies I did various internships in the fashion industry for example at Rena Lange in Munich and the Condé Nast publishing house. The latter reminded me at lot of ‘The Devil wears Prada’. They did not leave out one cliché as described in the novel. After that I got an offer in Zurich, ended up at the human resource department of a young firm with a 60-hours week, unfair, unacceptable and below the belt working conditions. I quit and only had thoughts about fleeing.
MS: And those thoughts brought you where?
SG: To India, where my love for colors and fabrics awakened again. In Rajasthan I let someone tailor a dress from an old sari for me. And that was the cornerstone to design my own fashion and accessories. Back here I had the idea to sell the collection at an online shop. That was in June 2010. It started with a number of dresses. Each a unique specimen from old fabrics and turned into a huge success.

MS: In your Instagram pictures I noticed that you often wear these colorful boots …
SG: Often? Constantly! I don’t even take them off anymore (laughs). I’ve always had a fondness for Cowboy boots and after I found these in Marrakech I knew, those or none. I found a shoemaker there who framed the fit for my ‘Adillah Kilim Boots’. The boots are a mixture of leather and Kilim, the material of the Moroccan carpets.
MS: Your journeys also brought you to Mexico and Thailand. Which trends did you track down there?
SG: My journeys are my biggest source of inspiration. Nothing is more beautiful than to stroll through markets and bazars, observe the traditional craftsmanship, talk to the people, and getting to know their culture. In Mexico I came across the ‘Rebozo’-weave, a robust fabric, in which Mexicans transport their babies. I commission bags made from this fabric in combination with calf leather in Yucatan. In the process sustainability is an essential factor for me. Made in China or child labor is something I don’t even consider. I am checking it out on the spot and examine the products pedantically. In the north of Thailand I discovered the so-called ‘Hilltribe’-fabrics, from which the villagers in the mountains make their traditional costumes. I use them as trimming and apply them on cashmere-scarves, made in Italy.

MS: You are living the style consequently, as I can see from your apartment.
SG: Yes, that’s true. My apartment is full of reminiscences from my travels, souvenirs and findings from the flea market. It is my most beautiful and important retreat, only surpassed by the mountains and the sea.
MS: How do you relax?
SG: I run and do Yoga. But my favorite thing is to travel. I am already looking forward to summer, when the whole family gathers at our house in Croatia, south of Split, directly by the sea, simply gorgeous! We make our own olive oil. Those weeks are my energy source and absolute lifeblood. BvH

Very chic: Pan Am Lounge employee Cecilie looks like she just appeared from a time journey in her Pan Am uniform

There’re lots of party hotspots in Berlin, but one of them is ranked very high in my personal ranking: the Pan Am Lounge in Berlin. No other location is so history-charged and simultaneously cool and hip like the lounge, which once pertained to the pilots and stewardesses of the American airline Pan Am as their Berlin home.

Indeed West Berlin could have only be approached by the airlines of the western alliance after the Second World War. Besides Pan Am, those were Airfrance and British Airways. In 1965 the former major of Berlin and later chancellor of Germany Willy Brandt inaugurated the Europa-Center. There the Pan Am ensconced itself and opened its headquarter in the pile between Ku’damm and Breitscheidtplatz. The airline concurrently solved the question where to leave the staff during their flight free days: cabins- and cockpit crews got accommodated in the adjacent apartment building ‘Eden-Haus’. It was the beginning of a legendary party era.

And on top of the socalled ‘Eden-Haus’ in the 12th floor a place for leisure has been designed for the crews, from which roof one has an unrestricted all-round view over Berlin. This dream location was officially reserved for the employees of Pan Am, whose wild parties had a reputation like a donnerhall. This raised desire and an exclusive circle got access to the Pan Am Lounge – with Willy Brandt as one of the prominent fans of the first hour. But in the course of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 as well as the merger of the two parts of Berlin ended the party era. Pan Am went bankrupt. And the Lounge fell into a deep sleep.

A place for leisure for pilots and stewardesses

Then Natascha Bonnermann appeared, a Rhenish cheerful person with Austrian experiences in the gastronomy, who looks like she has just arisen out of the Sixties. When the former actress turned the keys of the lounge ten years ago, she was astonished: in front of her lay a sixties-paradise, a jewel box, that would have withstand every movie set. The present manager of the Pan Am Lounge blew the dust from the teak furniture and bar chairs and immersed new life into the lounge. The revival of the legendary party-location!

“Sixties design never got old”, says Natascha Bonnermann. “It got either more appealing.”

However the true treasure slumbered one floor under the lounge: a small maisonette apartment, that was inhabited by the Pan Am pilots and still gives the feeling, that a man with suitcase could enter the room just in every second: kidney-shaped tables and 60s chairs in front of clinker-chimney and wallpapered doors.

In the lower part of the apartment-suite one will see an original 60s kitchen including a bar, as well as a sleeping- and living room on the upper floor (whose walls are covered with zebra printed carpet). What might have happened at this place?
Even nowadays a former Pan Am stewardess, who likes to remind herself of the wild 60s, still lives in the apartment building ‘Eden-Haus’. The best partys in town, which have been celebrated there. And are even celebrated nowadays. BvH

The 100 square meter showroom at the Potsdamer Straße is a white room that doesn’t distract from the hat creations in his design

What a remarkable, creative job I’m thinking upon entering Fiona Bennett’s hat shop at the Potsdamer Straße in Berlin and am standing in front of her incredibly beautiful creations. One hat is more impressive than the other and if I wouldn’t be looking for a specific occasion – the ‘Wiesn’ in Munich – I would be completely overchallenged.

Hat designer Fiona Bennett knows the slightly enraptured and enchanted reaction of her customers. With a scrutinizing look into my green eyes she puts a lime green hat decently loaded with a lot of ornaments, starting with feathers to opulent silk flowers and shiny applications from her new garp collection onto my head. I instantaneously feel comfortable, since I like wearing hats. Yes, this could be it.

For months Fiona Bennett and her team have been working on the completion of the latest collection that includes seven themes and that distinguishes itself completely from the summer collection by the material and color choices. Shaped by noble velvet and patent leather, the collection that will grace the heads of many women this fall and winter is called so adequately ‘Black Cherry’. “It is quite couture-like and therefore suitable for evening occasions”, explains the designer the magnificent headdresses. “This season’s trend is reduced and pure.” Need more color? How about a model in the new powder shades.

At the atelier there is a buzzing atmosphere, people steam and sew like crazy, because in two weeks the ‘Oktoberfest’ in Munich is starting: “And that is when the big demand for hats is happening, always shortly before the ‘O’zapft is’ “, smiles Fiona Bennett. She is well prepared. For the new models the milliner – how the hat designer’s job is traditionally called – has rediscovered an old artisanal tradition: creating feathers and other ornaments from the same material like the hat, felted mohair for example.

The native Brit Fiona Bennett has been living in Berlin since the 70s. Though born in Brighton, Fiona grew up in Berlin Charlottenburg and even as a little girl already knew that she wanted to do something creative and plastic. 25 years ago she learned the craftsmanship from an old Berlin milliner from scratch. Today Fiona Bennett’s creations are worn by celebrities like Christina Aguilera, Yoko Ono – and thanks to the men’s collection even by superstars Hugh Jackman, or Brad Pitt. “Often black limousines drive up and drop off the prominent clientele”, reveals Fiona Bennett, who never leaves the house without a hat herself.

Each hat model is developed in pure handiwork within several days. “It is a task full of concentration and meditative calmness”, describes Fiona Bennett her passion. A rare relict in today’s digital age

In her 100 square meter showroom Fiona Bennett also displays her amazingly soft knitting collection ‘Kiss by Fiona Bennett’, which is sold within 60 countries, besides the men and women’s hat collections. Bennett’s couture hats are often custom-made designs, as of recent, when a customer had hair of its own horse incorporated into the hat.

„The hat stands in the tradition of surrealism”, describes Bennett her design. “It always has something to do with leading things ad absurdum.” Yet it is important to her that a hat endues – and doesn’t disguise. The hat should reflect its owner’s personality. Back to my own hat concern and the near ‘Oktoberfest’: I decide to go with the lime green creation. The trendy flower wreaths that you can see everywhere these days are very sweet – in my opinion – for young girls. A grown woman rather chooses a suitable hat to go with her dirndl. BvH
