Beautiful views and the fine-sandy beach of Bridgehampton

As I recently got invited to my friends’ home on Long Island, I did not hesitate long: booked the flight, packed my suitcase, the hubby in tow and off we went. Conveniently, Air Berlin offers a non-stop flight from Berlin to New York. After two movies in the flight program, a little writing for MyStylery and a power-nap the plane landed eight hours later, in time on the John F. Kennedy Airport. There, a Blacklane limousine waited for us and chauffeured us comfortably to the Hamptons, where we were warmly welcomed by our friends with chilled drinks and a perfect sunset.

The villas in the Hamptons are protected by high hedges and heavy gates – mostly hidden for prying eyes!

Long Island is the Sylt of the American east coast, a playground for the rich, super-rich and not always pretty. Crazy lifted women – and yes, also men – you meet preferably in the Hamptons – inter alia consisting of Southampton, Bridgehampton and East Hampton: Island centrally located, a two-hour drive from Manhattan, from here you go another hour to Montauk, one of the easternmost points of the USA and the scene of one of my favorite novels by Swiss author Max Frisch. Who has a (second) home here – and this possibly by the sea or with a view – has made it.

Modern architecture with large window elements and airy terraces is the new trend in the Hamptons

Absolutely fantastic are the endless beaches, where private villas line up in different architecture together like beads on a string. Depending on the location, a house can cost around $ 60 million which is something, even for stars like Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey and Tiger Woods. Fashion designer Calvin Klein is said to have paid $ 75 million for his estate. Increasingly, you can see modern architecture, which large windows allow unrestricted views of the Atlantic. Ornate buildings in Tudor style are not so en vogue anymore.

For the Fourth of July weekend everybody came by. Even in the Barre-class, in the Exhale Mind Body Spa, it was difficult to find a free spot. In the Round Swamp Farmers market, Foodies and friends of organic kitchen queued while convoys of Maseratis, Mercedes and Bentleys turned the road between Watermill and Bridgehampton into an endless traffic jam. The restaurants are fully booked since ages. How fortunate that we were invited to dinner Sunday night at the home of friends. Under luxury tents, two elegant tables with lavish floral arrangements were established. Movie star Scarlett Johansson plus husband Romain Dauriac – a French journalist – sat on my opposite. Pop legend Bryan Ferry, a close friend of the host was supposed to come. A perfect evening, including fireworks, albeit from neighboring properties.

Summer Vibes

Tired of the hustle and bustle? Then a small sidestep to the Shelter Island is a good idea. With a ferry we cross from the chic marina and fishing town of Sag Harbor in five minutes and then end up in a different world in which there is only one grocery store and the time seems to have stopped. The place to meet is the hotel-restaurant Sunset Beach, with feet in the sand, enjoying delicious fish or lobster with a glas of André Balazs’ rosé wine – made on Long Island. And all that topped by a magnificent sunset again. Life is beautiful. BvH

In the 19th century there were only potato fields and poultry farms on Long Island, today there are a handful of long-established farmers whose families sell fruit, vegetables and homemade jam by the street, as in Watermill

Long Island Tip I:

The season runs from the last Monday in May (Memorial Day) to the first Monday in September (Labor Day). To escape the crowds and the related congestion, it’s best to come just before or after the season.
You want to rent a house? The average rent of a villa with four bedrooms from May to September is $ 180,000.
The early bird catches the worm: The few motels and bed and breakfasts on Long Island are busy months in advance.

From New York to Long Island and return

Long Island Tip II:

The bus lane Hampton Jitney departs from various stops in Manhattan to Long Island, for example, 39 Street/3rd Ave. From there, you drive 2 hours to Bridgehampton and about 2.5 hours to East Hampton. One should definitely book in advance. Tickets from $ 24: hamptonjitney.com

More stylish and much faster – namely in 35 minutes – one flies by Blane helicopter, directly from Manhattan’s Wall Street to the Hamptons. $ 495 per person, one way, of course

Every morning when Jasmin Taylor wakes up, she first notices the pink silk-covered pouf in her boudoir; behind is a whole armada of pink bags, shoes in all imaginable pink-nuances and even the walls of her walk-in closet are covered in pink silk. The prospects of the successful touristic-entrepreneur, who welcomes me with her pink pumps and matching pants in her villa in Berlin, weren’t always the best. Born in Teheran, she witnessed the begin of the Iran Revolution with thirteen years, whereupon her parents sent her to Germany with 17. All alone and without any knowledge of German, she began a new life in Bonn. She learnt the language determinedly, got the German Abitur, studied Psychology and Management in the USA afterwards. Back in Germany her carrier in the tourism industry began.

MyStylery: Mrs Taylor, where does your proclivity for the color magenta come from? Even the logo of your firm JT Touristik is pink.
Jasmin Taylor: Pink symbolizes feminism, emotionality and is a signal color at the same time. As women eventually decide on the travel destination, the color design of the logo seems to be a logical consequence.

MS: You studied Psychology and Economics. How did you become a travel organizer?
JT: This was more a coincidence. I knew that I wanted to create an online-company. The only things with which you could make money online around the turn of millennium were CD’s, books and travels. As is liked travelling, I decided for the touristic line. In 2002 I started as a “one-woman-show” and established JT Touristik in 2009.

MS: The “Travel Industry Club” elected her as travel manager of the year in 2011. Her company made 150 Million Euros in the past year; she employs 60 staff members and offers travelling in 150 destinations. How did you get so successful?
JT: It’s the cost-benefit ratio, which convinces our clients. They book a five star hotel for the price of a four star house. I call this “Value for Money”.

MS: Berlin is your center of life. What inspired you about the city?
JT: Berlin is the only cosmopolitan city in Germany, if not even in Europe. After I even found my dream house in the capital five years ago, Berlin to me is “the place to be”.

MS: How do working and living in the same house work out? Isn’t a little distance missing sometimes?
JT: No, quite the contrary. I have short distances. This saves time. When I designed my private flat, I made sure that the concept of color is different to the one of the company’s rooms; even though I couldn’t completely – to my architects chagrins – quit pink. (laughs)

MS: When you bought the villa in 2010, you found yourself in ruins.
JT: Yes, the house was in a miserable state, my nephew called it “Dracula’s Villa”. The roof was open, the nature was in control, birds nested everywhere. It’s already being refurbished since five years.

MS: What was important to you for the interior concept?
JT: The concept I worked on together with the Berliner architect Holger Hansen and the interior designer Karim El-Barbari. It’s inspired by French Art-Deco and the Wiener Akademie in the 1930s, but interpreted modern with clear lines and luxury materials. And it was supposed to reflect upon my oriental roots, which Holger Hansen and Karim El-Barbari worked out perfectly. My father often traded in fabrics and silks, so that I already had an affinity to textiles. The antique Persian carpets were the demands for the interior design, everything else had to be fit on them, after the motto: Prussia meet Persia. The outcome was a mix of modern and classic elements, with which I am very happy.

The flagship store of Ralph Lauren in New York, 888 Madison Avenue, Corner of 72th

An absolute highlight of shopping are the Ralph Lauren flagship stores on Madison Avenue in New York. At number 888 the ladies get their money’s worth, vis-a-vis the gentlemen in the legendary “Rhinelander Mansion” – one of the few surviving Beaux Arts buildings in Manhattan. A compelling case that I decide immediately to enter the 888, because in this turn-of-the-century- villa not only the women’s collection is shown, but also the home collection that touches the heart of every interior fan.

Unfortunately this is not my new apartment on the Upper Eastside, but the home collection in the Ralph Lauren flagship store, New York

Quite deliberately, the designer has opted a historic house, extensively renovated by the New York architect Weddle Gilmore in collaboration with Thomas Hat by HS2 Architecture, instead of putting on cool “It-Design”.

The property on the Upper East Side was once issued by the rich New Yorker Ruth Brown to the architects McKim, Mead & White and completed in 1893. Mrs. Brown – then widowed – however never moved in. Instead, the millionairess Alva Vanderbilt bought the residence with the white limestone facade in 1895.

And although the building presents the world of Ralph Lauren, it reminds me more of Coco Chanel, as I walked through the impressive, black and white decorated staircase. Elegance and luxury on each of the four floors on approximately 22,000 square feet. I think this villa would be loved by Mademoiselle Chanel.  BvH
