A trip to Vienna without visiting the restaurant ‘Zum Schwarzen Kameel’ (‘Black Camel’) simply doesn’t work out. Legendary and elegant are the words that describe the ‘Black Camel’ very well, one of the classics of the Viennese gastro-scene, which is still pretty hip. Tourists feel magically attracted to the place and sit outside even during this season in the so-called ‘Schanigarten’ under radiant heaters with a glass of two eights of wine. But the truly hip-factor are the Viennese people themselves, who love this institution and like to come by for an after-hour drink at the food stall and enjoy their lives at deafening, surrounding noise.

Still present: the logo of the black camel, which has been designed and drawn by the painter Georg Waldmüller in the 19th century

Already founded in 1618 as a spice shop by Johann Cameel, the ‘Black Camel’ is located in the middle of the first district, less than five minutes apart from the Stephansdom. In the beginning of the 20th century the house in the Bognergasse has been rebuild. And the current interior still dates back to this time. Wood paneling, the showcases, the bar and especially the furnishings of the restaurant are hundred years old. A historical gem with its beautifully Art Nouveau.

I choose from the patisserie: Sachertorte (Sacher cake), apple strudel and raspberry tart and a delicious Darjeeling-Tea

The filled ‘Semmeln’ (sandwiches) of the ‘Black Camel’ were already popular at grandfather’s time. If you prefer quietness and coziness go to the adjacent restaurant, and you’ll indulge in Art Nouveau interior and order something from the in-house – incidentally delicious – patisserie. Or you choose from the menu: from roast beef to goose liver, caviar or bio-salmon: bon appetite or how you would say in Vienna: An Guadn! BvH

What: Theresa Bar
Where: Munich, Germany

The color concept: elegant staged in tones of brown and green with red spots of color*

Wow, how chic is this, I think to myself, when I enter the Theresa Bar in Munich. Placed in a hidden backyard and probably already known by the experts of the scene, Theresa Bar, which opened a couple of months ago, meanwhile doesn’t count to the real insider tips anymore. But the hip bar is already one of my favorite places in the metropolis of the Isar. Why? I’ll tell you:

Light objects and also the furniture have been manufactured*

A good bar has three essential criteria:
Drinks, Atmosphere, Service. To me – as an interior-person – the optical presentation is from high importance, as it essentially decides, whether I feel good at a place or not. The architects Stephanie Thatenhorst and Seven Elohim truly succeeded with their design. The Theresa Bar exudes real Hollywood glamour: awesome, how you would say it there. With its menial, velvety sofas and the chilled cocktail chairs, the bar reminds of the 50s and 60s and could even be a film set of my American favorite TV series Mad Men: you won’t be surprised, if Don Draper alias Jon Hamm would look around the corner.

The drinks:

Next to a well sorted selection of wines, the Theresa Bar offers cocktail classics from the 60s like ‘Champagne Daisy’ (Pomegranate, Chartreuse Jaune, Lemon, Champagne) or ‘Fairbanks Cocktails’ (Gin, Apricot, French Vermouth). How about a time journey through a diversity of Martini-Variations? This will be possible at Theresa Bar! And on the menu you’ll find bar classics like Beef Tatar, beef fillet and autumn-vegetables for the vegetarians: convincing quality for acceptable prices.

Conclusion: a true enrichment, a beautiful location – suitable for a humorous girls night as well as a romantic Diner à Deux. BvH

It’s a very unusual thing to open a restaurant that includes a menu that only offers the favourite dishes of friends. But the Berlin restaurant proprietor Heinz Gindullis wanted to create a place for friends and so opened the restaurant Crackers in Berlin Mitte in the former rooms of legendary club Cookies.

There are no windows in Crackers. Large mirrors reflect the light and give the room a different dimension

As medially out of five children born and grown up in London, Heinz Gindullis alias Cookie comes to Berlin in the 90s. “Apparently I was a cute small child, who was called Cookie by everyone”, explains the successful restaurant proprietor his nickname, that makes him and the identically named club to one of the most important sizes of the capital scene. He started whilst the wild Berlin club years as dishwasher in a Jewish restaurant, where he works his way up as barkeeper. After a couple of years he opens his own bar, the first Cookies. Seven other identically named clubs in different locations followed. “The club was so fully crowded at the opening of the seventh Cookies that a friend of mine meant that the place should be called Crackers.” Years later the time had come. The Cookie-club-era was over – after 20 years in total.

“After 20 years of club scene I wanted to do something new,” says Cookie. “At some point there’s maybe a new club. One should never say NEVER. “

“I personally don’t feel like nightlife anymore”, explains Cookie about his new beginning and adds whilst laughing: “it’s a matter of age. I want to know the people for whom I’m doing something. Teenagers are obviously not my generation anymore”, resumes the restaurateur, who by himself never worked as a waiter, but therefore had even more precise ideas of a good service: “In America are lots of people who delude others with an over friendly habitus. On the one side the service can be pretty rough in Berlin, on the other it’s honest. And the guest is also responsible for a good togetherness. He also has to behave”, says Cookie and points out “always to stand behind one team.”

Long live the Crackers!

And like in all his other places, there’s obviously also a big surprising effect, because the arriving guest first has to walk through the kitchen – passing the steaming pots and swirling cooks –, before he then takes place in the restaurant itself. “I was always a fan of gangster movies and wild chases through kitchens”, explains Cookie. “And the way through the ‘open kitchen’ is also a sign for openness and transparency.” Leaving the cooking-action behind, the guest will then find himself in a room with a long bar and tables on different seating areas.

Copper-lamps that hang over Mahagoni-tables and seats with petrol coloured covers produce a deemed light. The guest chooses between nine starts and six main courses out of fresh ingredients like a grilled iceberg lettuce with Stilton and lemon vinaigrette, the favourite dish of Cookie.

By the way: the flexible furniture system provides that the Crackers can be used for different events. Scarcely the fashion label “Lala Berlin” rocked the closing party of the Berlinale in the walls of the Crackers. BvH
