Trendscout MyStylery on tour: Looking for the latest interior trends at the interior fair Maison et Objet

Since many years I visit one of the most impressive – if not the most interesting – Fair for Interior and Housing, the Maison et Objet in Paris. On many thousands of square meters more than 1,000 exhibitors in eight halls are presented twice a year – in January and in September – the international audience with the latest interior design trends. A mega show, a must for all interior designers, architects and lifestyle experts and my seasonal highlight, to which I look forward to in advance. However, this fall the exhibition was below my expectations.

Of course, everyone knows that the wheel cannot be invented again. But similar to the development in fashion, one also hopes in the world of living, at least for a new vision or an inspiration. The result of my over two days extending on-site investigation, I summarize as follows: There is not much new.

Trend 1:

Peacock Thrones – I looove these extravagant wicker chairs, which admittedly – due to their expansive dimensions – take a lot of place. So retro, so chic! And hardly any of the top exhibitors, that did not have any of these opulent armchairs in the program in his autumn – winter collection.

Trend 2:

The color green – whether as glass or tableware, wallpaper, sofa cover or lamp stand: No one at the Maison et Objet missed out on green. The color palette included all the nuances: From soft lime green to juicy fir green. Actually a color palette, which I would have expected more in the spring. But I was glad to have ever spotted a trend. I will not complain. The Maison et Objet will probably never lose its charm for me. This is already guaranteed by the location in Paris, one of my favorite cities, that already accounts for only the stimulus, to visit the Maison et Objet.

Interesting:

Polite reservation and reduced minimalism seem to belong more to the past in these times of social and political change. I mostly came across lush exuberance in the form of bright brass, satin and silk. Even copper is still one of the favorite materials. The cottage-chic is more than ever socially acceptable, which I can only be glad off, with my little renovation project in Brandenburg. The theme country style and natural materials were served almost perfectly. Interestingly, by manufacturers of different nations. That has something connecting, right? BvH

Madonna’s private cook Mayumi Nishimura and I in the Japanese restaurant Ula in Berlin

Mayumi Nishimura seems to be ageless. It’s hard to believe that the open-minded Japanese is already in her sixties. Also the fact that Mayumi has been the chief cook for pop star Madonna for eight years – sure a strenuous job – doesn’t change the fresh appearance of the specialist of Macrobiotic cuisine. I meet Mayumi in the Japanese restaurant Ula, in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg. Here the now successful cookbook author Mayumi prepares the favorite recipes of the queen of pop and her family for the next two week­s. And she explains incidentally, why macrobiotic diet can change our lives.

MyStylery: What is the difference between vegan and macrobiotic kitchen?
Mayumi Nishimura: In the macrobiotic kitchen you choose the food that you want. We never say you have to eat vegan only. If you need for example eggs or fish, you have it. We eat more grains and there is no sugar at all, also no honey. We use maple syrup instead. In the macrobiotic kitchen we are focused on local, seasonal and balanced food, it’s like yin and yang. We say it’s whole food.

MS: What was your inspiration to cook vegan?
MN: I once read the book “Zen Macrobiotic” and it convinced me. I wanted to study more and learn more about the philosophy. So I left Japan and went to Boston, where I studied with Michio Kushi. This happened in the 80s with the first Aids victims. One guy I met during these days decided to live only the Macrobiotic way and he had 30 more years. But of course Macrobiotic is not only for sick people.

Second dish: Barley miso soup with onion

MS: How did you get in contact with Madonna?
MN: A friend of mine recommended me and Madonna asked me to come for a weekend to try it. (laughs) Rocco was 9 months old and Lourdes turned 5 years and I first started cooking for the kids. Then Madonna started her tour and after her film shooting I became part of the team, also when Madonna decided to move to London. That was quite a decision for me, because I have lived in the States for 17 years and I was a single mom of a 17 year old daughter. But my daughter convinced me to take this chance.

I loved the sea vegetable and cucumber salad with sesame dressing – and the beautiful golden plate!

MS: I’m curious. Tell me a little about the eating habits of the Ritchie-Ciccone family.
MN: In the beginning Madonna never ate together with the kid, because they were too small and she always ate late. Guy Ritchie was the one who wanted to have the macrobiotic food in first place. But during his film production he deserved meat. Madonna and the kids sometimes have some, too. By the way, the very first time I cooked meat was in England. I wasn’t trained in western style kitchen. I had to ask Guy Ritchie to teach me how to do it. (laughs)
MS: This must be a real experience, I can imagine.
MN: Yes, definitely! It takes much more time to prepare vegetables. And it took me three months to get used to the smell of cooked chicken. I even tried Lamb chops these days.
MS: Did you like it?
MN: Not really. I thought it was strange.

Mayumi Nishimura (here in a denim kimono) is a master chef of macrobiotic cooking. Animal proteins are frowned upon, so macrobiotic limits on its ingredients such as cereals, grains, brown rice and vegetables and is not without controversy

MS: My kids loved everything but no healthy food. They were completely addicted to unhealthy dishes such as pizza and pasta. How about Rocco and Lourdes then?
MN: That time they liked it and I could convince them. Madonna pays great attention to her figure and never has fast food. When the kids wanted a burger, I tried to find something which is healthy and looks like a burger, but it was whole wheat. I just choose the best food quality. Let me tell you, bread is really much empty calories.

MS: Are you still working with Madonna?
MN: Yes, when her kitchen chief is on vacation and I still accompany her when she is on tour.
MS: Is it hard to satisfy Madonna and her expectations?
MN: Yes and no. I was free to decide. That’s why I stayed with her for eight years. I wished she would have asked me what she wants to eat every day. Sometimes her assistant gave me a hint, that I should try something new.

MS: Is the served dinner here in the restaurant Ula a typical Madonna menu?
MN: Madonna eats much simpler. She has a soup as a starter and as a main vegetables. That’s all. Her favourite dish is the inside-out avocado roll and she loves Quinoa.
MS: What doesn’t she like at all?
MN: Like most people she avoids tropical fruits. She is more focused on seasonal and local fruits.

Main course: Fried tofu steak with radish puree was frankly not really my thing. The other dishes tasted much better

MS: What is your ultimate tip for staying healthy?
MN: You have to be aware what you consume and in which combination. If you eat the wrong food your body has to work on it for days. That costs you a lot of energy. After ten days of macrobiotic food you can feel the difference. After three to four months your whole blood has changed, after seven years cells and hair has changed. Macrobiotic is a tool to find what you need in your life.

MS: Looking back to the past years with Madonna, how did the job with her and her family influenced your life?
MN: Madonna gave me the opportunity to look on food from the other side. I touched Mozarella for the first time at the age of 45 years. Maybe it feels the same, when people try tofu for the first time. Today I use more herbs like Basil in my cooking. Madonna’s life is four or five times faster than the most other lifes. But it’s admiring. I still have contact to the kids. I recently saw Rocco and his friends in London where I live. It’s like being a part of the family. I wish Madonna all the best. BvH

Star architect Matteo Thun and I at the design fair Salone del Mobile in Milan

His designs are well known, you’ve experienced them already – of that I’m sure – because you’ve either sat or slept on them: Designer Matteo Thun and his designs are global and award wining: Hotels like the Side-Hotel in Hamburg and the Marriot in Venice, china for Rosenthal and Alessi, watches for Bulgari and Swatch. Thun was a student of Oskar Kokoschka, is graduated doctor of architecture, has been a founder of Sottsass Associati in 1981 and also of the legendary design-group Memphis. In 1984 he has started his company Thun & Partner for architectural-, design-, and communication-projects. Matteo Thun lives in Milano, where I have met with him, in the course of the design fair Salone del Mobile, for an interview.

MyStylery: At the Salone del Mobile 2016 the apparent trend was wood namely in all living areas, from the kitchen to the bathroom. How do you explain the revival of the material?
Matteo Thun: Wood is a reaction to the inanimated period of the 90s, where minimalistic design got colder and colder and emotions vanished from the surface. Now we have a change of paradigm: During the last century concrete and cement were dominating. Now we have the century of wood. I am an architect and I believe me, it is much easier constructing things with wood than with cement.

MS: You have just designed the wooden table ‘Icon’ for the the Italian furniture brand Riva 1920. Where did the collaboration result from?
MT: I’ve worked with wood and also with Riva for a long time now, because it’s the only company nearby Milan that works with solid wood and not laminated wood. That complies with my credo: The truth and not the lie.
MS: What is the most important project you’re working on right now?
MT: The system “Welcome Homes” refugee centers that are being deployed Germany-wide. We have deliberately opted for wood. There is no alternative if you want to build fast and inexpensively. In this case emotions didn’t play a part, it’s just plainly and simply the factor time.

MS: Which design collaboration would you reject?
MT: Everything around the car and everything that has to do with garments – that’s nothing for me.
MS: Is there something you haven’t conceptualized yet but would like to build?
MT: I would like to build a church without a roof for Pope Frances, as a gift for a man, who has changed Rome and therefore hopefully our beautiful country and our society.
MS: Where will the church be?
MT: Wherever he wants.
MS: Is he already aware of it?
MT (laughs): No, not yet.

“The ‘Welcome Homes’ is a system for refugee centers”, Matteo Thun explains to me. “We build new houses for new arrivals. They can also be used for social housing.”

MS: What is your current project?
MT: We’re 80 employees solely in Milano and just as much at the construction sites and we have many of them (laughs). The best project currently however is our digital platform ‘Matteo Thun Atelier’. I would like to invite you to visit this platform and you will realize that you’re a designer. You can create everything your house needs by yourself. It doesn’t matter if it’s a table or a chair. You don’t need a designer. I am convinced that the future belongs to Losgröße* eins (lot size one) …
MS: What does that mean?
MT: That means that you can put together the chair you want yourself.
MS: Without any previous knowledge?
MT: Without any previous knowledge. We are all designers. Democracy has won. Take the Nike shoe as an example. You can create the shoe you want. That is unique and not even more expensive. And that’s exactly what we are trying to do with this platform, especially for our hotels. Every interior designer can create whatever they need for their project, with our specification. We have finally made design accessible for everyone.
MS: But didn’t you exclude yourself with this process?
MT (laughs): I am already excluded. Since the 90s I don’t sign any of my projects with my name anymore. From time to time it may leak through that I am responsible for it but I don’t emphasize on generating value with my name. The value stands for itself. It is your vision and something you want. BvH

The light-flooded hall architecture of Fiera Milano is an eye catcher by itself

Each year Milano gets into a state of excitement. Exhibitors and fair visitors from around the world invade the city of fashion and Campari, the room prices of the fully booked hotels triple or even quadruple, the popular restaurants are completely over booked in advance anyhow, taxis are scarce goods and there are practically no parking spaces anywhere. Instead, the crowded pavements are full with beautiful and stylish people. Already on the evening before the official opening of the Salone del Mobile – the most important design fair in Europe – Milano is a party.

Let me touch this quickly: Is this really wood?

The noble boutiques on the Via della Spiga or Montenapolone are opened ‘till late at night to celebrate their cooperation’s with premium brands of the furniture industry. The Prosecco bottles were popping and one was drinking “una Piscina” (Prosecco on ice, one of my favorite drinks). Feverish excitement lay in the air. Everybody wants to be there, when, for example the L’Uomo Vogue together with the AD-Magazine and the kitchen manufacturer Asko invite into the newly opened luxurious hotel Mandarin Oriental, where champagne is already out after an hour.

That isn’t a bad thing, I say to myself, because the other days I have to be fit for the exhibition grounds, the Fiera Milano. A day at the fair is quite exhausting. Against this madness, the Way of St. James is a refreshing stroll. The 55^th Salone del Monile awaits with thousands of exhibitors in 22 halls. Every other year – also in 2016 – the EuroCucina, the current kitchen trends are being exhibited as well. And the Salone del Bagno presents the new innovation in the bathroom division.

At the same time in the area around Via Tortona the parallel event Fuori Salone takes place, where international design newcomers present their designs. Former factories and warehouses, hidden backyards and lofts are becoming temporary exhibition- and party locations. The event has cult status by now and resembles a promising networking service: Many young talents have been employed from the spot by established designers.

But what is new on the design firmament? Definitely and actually trans-sectorial is the use of wood. Wood? Which is as old as the evolution, the critics amongst you may think! Right. But – as so often – it is the combination of different materials. Let’s start with the EuroCucina: There is not one kitchen manufacturer who renounces wood. The solid wood kitchen is hip. Ciao to the clean intense, fingerprint absorbing high gloss fronts – you only play a minor role at most. Wood is the clear star. Namely rough and haptic in the natural tone of the respective type of wood. Favorite partner of the wood is – you won’t believe it – marble. And that looks mega (!!!) chic. A thick worktop from marble, that’s quite something! The mere sight of it instantaneously awakens the I-want-effect in me.

Wood in the bathroom area is also on the rise. It goes to the extent that toilet bowls as well as bidets are offered in wood optic. Companies, who have always put their focus towards wood, for example Team7 or Riva 1920 benefit a lot from this trend. Star designer Matteo Thun has just designed the table ‘Icon’ for Riva. He told me: “Wood is the answer to the unloving, minimalistic design of the 90ies.” I think he’s right. BvH

Classical elegance at Eichholtz: I am a fan of the small, velvet green armchairs with fringe bordures

I just came back from Paris, where I went to the trade fair ‘Maison et Objet’, where I researched the newest interior trends, furniture- and accessories-brands for you. Even though I have been to this fair for almost ten years now the impressions still remain amazing: Almost 3.000 exhibitors presented their collections in eight halls on 121.500 (!) square meters. The most known furniture brands like Gervasoni, Ligne Roset, Flamant, Grange, Jonathan Adler and Andrew Martin are represented here as well as the home collections of fashion designers like Ungaro, Ralph Lauren, Cavalli, Missoni or Fendi.

Playful and opulent are the interior accessories, like here at Asiatides, which you can order at my interior shop

I always head to my personal favorites like Asiatides or Versmissen first, because they offer unique, antique items, which are quickly sold out. Moreover I also order furniture and extraordinary interior-accessories for my interior projects. I love to discover new brands. In goose-step and after an exact ‘pattern’ I run through the eight halls and each time I think what the odometer would say after the day.

Available in all variants: Retro light bulbs and illuminants

Especially in hall I, which always intrigues me with its ethnic-eclectic chic I have found a lot of special and individual newcomers. This season’s motto is called ‘wild’: amidst a more and more technological defined world we start to reflect increasingly back to the beginning and nature.

One of the most innovative brands is Sempre from Belgium; they exclusively make their products from natural or recycled materials. Here a wooden bench with linen upholstery

Of course, the rather minimalistic, Scandinavian design is also an essential representative of the motto and therefore takes an important influence on our homestyle. Many companies like Bleu Nature and Sempre almost exclusively work only with natural materials: Wood, fur, stone and wool. Still very current is also the so-called ‘industrial look’: industrial design paired with shabby chic.

Sempre also has a very inspiring fair stand: dive in, submerge and getting new ideas. Wonderful!

My impression though was that the political turmoils and new social unfoldings influence our way of living and the words safe haven and cocooning gain a whole new importance. I have seen incredibly much opulence. A comeback of the baroque forms with lots of splendor, gold and glitter. Maybe a demonstration for the wish for something familiar. A longing for warmth in the big, cold world. BvH

The concrete tile is a traditional classic, which just celebrates a comeback. This trend inspired the Israeli label Beija Flor to design their deceptively real synthetic adaptions, useable for floors and as wall or table decoration. MyStylery loves patterns!

The original store of Daunt books can be found on Marylebone High Street, which is my absolute fav shopping address in London*

One of my absolute favorite bookshops in the world is Daunt Books in London. Here time seems to be frozen. And this is because of the impressing interior, not because of an obsolete structure or little to offer. On the contrary, Daunt books offer a large selection of fiction and non-fiction books and an even bigger selection of travel books. Founded in 1990, there are five other stores located across the city: on Marylebone High Street, in Chelsea, Holland Park, Cheapside, Hampstead and Belsize Park. But to me the store on Marylebone High Street housed within a beautiful old Edwardian building is the most impressive one.

Even though Daunt Books has six different stores it is still an independent bookshop, which needs customers support. So next time you need to buy a travel- or coffeetable book, go to Daunt Books to live a true experience

Specialized in travel literature, the way Daunt arranges the books is particularly interesting. For a single country, guides, but also phrase books, history books, fiction and non-fiction books are gathered together. This is kind of unusual but I prefer this clever arrangement a lot.

Daunt pride themselves on old-fashioned service and extensive knowledge. The store’s owner James Daunt refuses to sell books he wouldn’t read himself. If you need a little rest of turbulent London life, enjoy the calm and distinguished atmosphere in here. It’s like a time journey, there’s nothing more pleasant than whiling away an hour or two. BvH

The Hamburger writer and organ builder Hans Henny Jahnn (1894 – 1959) is the eponym of the Hamburger hotspot ‘Henny’s’ on the Hans-Henny-Jahnn-Weg in Hamburg-Winterhude

Have you already been to Henny’s, asks my friend Franziska during one of my last trips to my old home town Hamburg. I haven’t – so let’s go. It’s not as easy as I thought to make a reservation, as the restaurant is always busy since its opening some months ago and the 65 seats are always fully booked. We use one of the last sunbeams of the year and meet each other for lunch on the beautiful, big sun terrace of the Henny’s.

In the pretty corner house, which is directly located at an ‘Alsterfleet’ (canal), already tried a couple of gastronomes their luck. The new chief of the house Danilo Del Favero, a native Italian, cleared out the time-honored real estate and brought new shine into it with a noble interior design that is held in grey- and earthy tones. Me as ‘interior-person’ also noticed the positive concept of light.

Del Favero, who learned in the traditionell ‘Atlantic Hotel’, serves his guests a whole range of dishes: from American luxury steak and Hamburger sausages to fresh pizza, burger or sushi: a colorful, uncommon mixture, which should be a treat for every guest. A huge fire place is a real eye catcher, this caters for ease, especially now, as the days are getting colder

I vary between ‘Königsberger Klopse’ (meat balls) and a mustard egg. When was the last time I ate that? Especially the offer of the home cooking pleases me, because sometimes you just need to eat well and indigenous. Where does this nowadays still exist? BvH

When I recently strolled through my fav interior exhibition ‘Maison et Objet’ in Paris I spotted a booth with an amazing interior collection, which I would love to introduce to you. Abigail Ahern is one of the most influential interior designers and tastemakers. Whether she is pioneering faux flowers or dark, inky color palettes, Abigail is consistently ahead of the design trail. She started her career in interior design in the United States, where she designed residential properties and chic hotels.

Abigail Ahern’s top 10 tips on how to color boost your home

1. Start by picking a color for your biggest room – say your living room or kitchen.
Choose a hue that feels beautiful and inspiring, and true to what you love. Build on this to create a limited palette of colors for your entire home, using different combinations of those colors in each room.
2. Use an existing feature in your pad to inspire the basis of your color scheme.
This could be a view from the window, a work of art or any favourite item you own.
3. Think about what you want from your home to communicate to the outside world.
No one will be talking about your beige-on-beige home, so go a little crazy. Be reckless, I say! The more your confidence grows, the more you’ll feel like experimenting with colour.

4. Be brave!
To start with, decorating with color can seem like a daunting task.
Color behaves differently according to where you put it. The effect changes again once you add lighting, pattern, texture and greenery into the mix. I think this is why people favour whites over any other color group, as they distort less when other elements are thrown into the mix. However, to me, this is a bit like decorating by numbers. Too easy!
Bold hues, on the other hand, make everything on display feel grander, cooler, more intense, with beautiful undertones subtly changing in the daylight. You’ll never look back!
5. Remember, there are no no-nos. Well almost none.
Pastels are one grouping I never want to work with. But then plop me in Miami and I’m sure I’d be instantly seduced!

6. Use color in unexpected places
Behind closed doors, inside kitchen cupboards, bedroom wardrobes, the loo – all those tucked away places that surprise the minute you enter.
7. Remember the small stuff
Introduce color through cushions, vases, bowls, fruit, greenery – you name it. There should be splashes everywhere for your eye to alight on!
8. All color schemes are improved by accents:
the final touches of color that add an element of surprise, and bring rooms to life.
There are no fixed rules when it comes to choosing these; just take care with the amount of color you use and where you use it. As fab as that bright orange might look on a pillow, it may not feel quite so amazing on four walls because the impact will be so much stronger.

9. Patterns provide necessary punctuation; don’t neglect them …
… They anchor a space like nothing else I know.
10. Create the illusion of space by blurring the boundaries between walls and ceilings.
Paint them all out the same color and suddenly you’ve made your space a zillion times bigger. Promise!
