The Munich Oktoberfest started already, and thus the question as to where to best stay emerges. You still have no place to stay? Maybe there is still an available room in the trendy Roomers Hotel. Landsberger Straße is close to the main train station and Theresienwiese (where the Oktoberfest takes place). Opened in September 2017, the hotel is centrally located in Munich’s Westend district. An area that is gilded as a new in-quarter of the Bavarian metropolis. But that – as to my impression – seems to be something of the future.

The Roomers in Munich: the right address for design lovers

After six years of refurbishment, the successful hoteliers Micky Rosen and Alex Urseanu – the creators of the Gekko Group (including the Roomers Hotels in Baden-Baden, Frankfurt and the Provocateur in Berlin), took over the former office complex. In the 80s building with its rather unspectacular façade, the two entrepreneurs installed a design hotel consisting of 281 rooms and suites ranging in size from 25 to 155 square meters, as well as various banquet rooms for events.

The Entrée of the Roomers welcomes the guest with a round reception, with the Roomers bar at the back. The center of the lobby is flanked by two room-high fireplaces and various inviting seating arrangements. In general, the architects at Concrete-Design Amsterdam have created a true feast for the eyes with the Roomers, according to the motto: Adieu, purism! Hello, comfort! Modern yet warm materials such as dark wood, cognac-colored leather, green velvet, mat or polished brass and marble pillars of the interior concept. Mirror effects provide selective optical enhancements.

But the first thing that comes to my mind is the friendly smile of one of the receptionists who must have inhaled the DNA of the Roomers. How else could you explain her commitment and warmth? Overall, I experience attentive and competent staff during my stay, which obviously fulfilled their job with fun and joy. Incidentally, the dress code of the employees provides an official business jacket, which combines jeans and sneakers, underscoring the unconventional, casual character of the hotel.

My room of the category Deluxe Premium is located on the 2nd floor. My glimpse immediately falls on the extremely comfortable king-size bed on a pedestal and a freestanding bathtub positioned in front of it. Gorgeous! In the black marble bathroom, I like the XXL rain shower, where the care products of the label Dead Clean exude a tart scent. Big plus: The separate toilet; skillfully located behind a mirror wall. The interior concept of the lobby and the choice of materials are consistently continued here. As a contrast to the black wooden floor, the walls were half-height boarded up with white wooden panels. Above, black and white photographs by Roger Weber. In the brass shelves, I find next to a Nespresso machine and the minibar decorative art by ZooZoo & Friends and an iPad for the hotel navigation. Of course, the rooms of the Roomers are equipped with high-speed internet, a Bang & Olufsen Bluetooth sound system and air conditioning. However, my personal highlight is the lighting system: annoying tinkering with which light switch belongs to which lamp is no longer necessary. The Roomers in Munich receives culinary support through the Izakaya restaurant and its upscale Japanese-Peruvian fusion cuisine (more on this soon in a separate article on MyStylery). The outdoor area has just opened with 30 seats. At the Izakaya, too, the Concrete Amsterdam design team created an extraordinary atmosphere with a huge, floating fish made from light beech wood as an eye-catcher. The Roomers guest is offered a breakfast buffet of the extra class. From the extent and the diversity of the food there is hardly anything comparable: From quinoa salad, beetroot humus, filled vine leaves and baked cauliflower – in line with the Israeli cuisine – the standards such as fresh fruit and juices, cereals and yogurt in all variants, Cheese, salmon, salami … And of course Leberkäse, sausages and pretzels. Because after all, we are in Bavaria.

For breakfast I treat myself with waffles with maple syrup and fresh fruit

The bigger the choice, the harder it is to choose: Eggs Benedict or rather avocado toast? I opt for the fresh waffles and love the organic Earl Gray of the label Belmondo. So much, that the friendly waitress surprised me with a sachet of tea for home. Even my favorite colleague at the front desk hands me a small bag with provisions for the journey home. “For the train ride,” she says, smiling at me. I am touched and wonder again if all this can be true? It can.  BvH

The rooms vary in sizes from 25 to 155 square meters, the latter being accounted for by the Roomers Suite on the sixth floor. This is also equipped with a Jacuzzi on the private roof terrace and – if you’re lucky – the view of the Alps. A room in the Deluxe Premium category costs an average of 320, – Euro per night. The room rates start depending on the season from 220, – Euro.

Bruges – Belgian pearl of medieval architecture. Here the market place “Markt”

For me as a Lübeck-native, a visit to the Belgian city of Bruges is like a déjà vu. Only that my hometown can not keep up with this collection of picturesque patrician houses, baroque city palaces and classical façades. Walking through Bruges’ old town, the many canals and bridges are reminiscent of Amsterdam. You can feel it in every corner of Bruges, that this architectural jewel was one of the most successful commercial cities from the 13th to the 15th century and it impresses me in which historical homogeneity the city still presents itself seven centuries later.

Bruges was never destroyed by wars or large-scale fires, which is why the famous historic center – since 2002 Unesco World Heritage Site – has been preserved

To get in the mood for my visit to Bruges, I watched the US film “In Bruges” with Colin Farrell and asked myself how they kept away the tourist crowds during filming. I was warned by my Belgian friend Winny: “Yes, it is always crowded in Bruges. Nevertheless, you should have been there once.” Maybe not on a weekend and certainly not when 20,000 football fans storm the city and celebrate the championship title of their club FC Bruges at the market in the old town. Day tourists flood the historic walls in every season from no later than 11 am and roll through the narrow streets of this picturesque village in West Flanders. Those who want to escape the crowds during the day simply walk beyond the respective squares such as “Markt” and “Burg” and suddenly find themselves in quiet residential areas or in greened patios. A break is also offered by the Beguinage, which is indeed a sightseeing highlight, however in which groups have no access.

Culinary, Bruges has adjusted to the tourists: around the market, castle and other “places to see” there are many restaurants, unfortunately not always good, and often with overpriced food. And although I know, you should spare mussels in months without the letter “r”, I ordered Moules Frites. The Belgian specialty is offered here all year round, is frozen foods and of doubtful quality. My tip: have lunch or dinner at one of the many Michelin and Gault Millau restaurants, many of which offer comparatively affordable lunch menus. Or one discovers the locals’ spots beyond the tourist paths, such as the café “Sanseveria” in the Predikherenstraat.

When the night comes over Bruges, the day tourists have left again, and the city and its inhabitants sigh recognizably. The old town dives into a special light, which effectively stages the old walls. Just around the corner from my hotel Prinsenhof lies the gourmet restaurant Guillaume. I enjoy a delicious menu and a super nice service. On the way to the hotel I experience the now deserted streets of Bruges by moonlight. Pure romance! A feeling that would hardly have come up a few hours earlier.  BvH

Where to bed in Bruges

There are some promising boutique hotels in Bruges such as the Van Cleef, Hotel Die Swaene or the Relais Bourgondisch Cruyce. The Relais Bourgondisch Cruyce is beautifully decorated (I love the Belgian interior with its soft colors) and is right by the canal. With its historic façade, it is one of the most photographed spots in the city. An aspect that causes some unrest. I decide for the Prinsenhof, which is within walking distance of three minutes from the market in a quiet side street.

I let myself be spoiled in the star restaurant Guillaume. The gourmet restaurant Guillaume in Korte Lane is located in an old cottage. From the outside it seems almost a bit unspectacular, so we almost passed it. I opt for the three-course menu “Crazy Creations” for 52 euros: Amuse Gueule from reinterpreted Vitello tonato, roast beef and pike-perch. As a starter: lobster, Fois Grois, Iberico ham and exotic fruits. Followed by guinea fowl with roasted diced tomatoes and a raspberry slice for dessert. We renounce the wine and choose the Rosé Luberon from Provence, 32 euros a bottle.

The 200-year-old manor house Gut Bliestorf …

Recently our friends Sabine and Rudolph invited us to their manor house Gut Bliestorf in Schleswig-Holstein. I asked in advance: “What are you celebrating?” The immediate answer was: “Life!” What a great occasion to drive back to my old homeland Schleswig-Holstein! Celebrating in the countryside usually also means staying in the countryside.  And this works particularly well at manor house Gut Bliestorf, because the von Schröders transformed the house into a charming boutique hotel in 2008. Embedded in an English landscape park, the guest experiences a 200-year-old manor house culture.

With over a century, the mansion Gut Bliestorf, which Rudolph’s grandfather Baron Johann Rudolph v. Schroeder bought in the early 20^th century, is family owned. It was built in Swiss style in 1843 by landowner and chief forester August Luis Detlev von Schrader. Later, influential families like family von Tode, von Köhler and von Wickede, who were the majors of town Lubeck, resided here. Today’s owners derive from a merchant dynasty that is rooted in Hamburg since the mid 18^th century. Nowadays, the estate operates besides conventional agriculture also a Demeter farming and a Demeter gardening center. As well as the said boutique hotel.

Sabine Schröder is responsible for the special style and the harmonic ambience of manor house Gut Bliestorf. With a keen sense of materials and colors, the Baroness gave new life and breath to the manor. Since then, the snow-white mansion and the English landscape park are unique settings, also for events. The Baroness got the idea of “renting-a-mansion” in England, where she was fascinated of the concept “First Class Bed & Breakfast”: “It exited me to live in castles or mansions and feel like home.” Thus, a mansion got turned into a boutique hotel with 13 individual rooms, in which one can wonderfully celebrate and stay overnight. I tried it myself after a long party night and the celebration of life. Just lovely! BvH

For ten years Enrique Mandl had managed the design hotel with its 40 stylish rooms as well as more Ocean Drive-Hotels, inter alia on Mallorca and in Barcelona. Mandl, who previously worked in Vienna at “Imperial” and “Bristol” as well as in Frankfurt and London for hotels of the Luxury Collection, today is a passionate fan of the Balearic Island. “Ibiza developed phenomenally during the last years and can absolutely measure up to big, international places”, says Enrique Mandl. “When I came on the island there only existed one five star house, today there’re twelve.” A synonym for Ibiza’s development from a merely party-island to a lifestyle spot with sophisticated culinary art.

Mandl sees the development of Ibiza quite critical, as the storm of international hotel chains led to an explosion of the price level. “One learned from the crisis”, says Mandl, “new building license for more hotels aren’t available anymore and existing building stocks are only allowed to be reconstructed.”

Six ultimate Ibiza tips by Enrique Mandl:

1. Last year the “Heart” in the neighbouring Grand Hotel opened, a restaurant with a new gastronomic concept under direction of Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté and century-cook Ferran Adrià. “This is more than spectacular for sure”, opines Enrique Mandl.

2. Beach clubs exist on Ibiza like sand at the sea. Now opened another one: “Tanit” at Playa d’en Bossa. “This is surely going to be a success, as the owner of Nassau beach club stands behind it”, discloses Enrique Mandl.

3. If you want to meet Jan Delay at Lunch you should go to “Fish-Shack”. “This is a fish stall in pure culture near Es Pouet in Talamanca. Here the best fish is being served at rough wooden tables”, fancies Enrique Mandl. “You won’t find other comparable authentic fish dishes on the island.”

4. The “Lio” – restaurant and show and a fantastic view over the old town of Ibiza – still counts to the highlights of the island.

5. “The old port is completely renovated”, tells Enrique Mandl. “All ships from 80 meters length onwards land there. Here you can see more than in Saint Tropez”.

6. Enrique’s favourite beach? “For sure the Cala Bassa at the West coast. It’s very relaxed and you’ll find a beautiful beach club as well.”

Ibiza Love Part III: In no particular order here are tips for an awesome stay on Ibiza

I still remember when I drove to San Juan five years ago, a small, sleepy village in the north of Ibiza. It was early afternoon, the streets were empty, the houses and a few shops closed, the sun burnt hot – deadly silence. Only one café was open and turned out to be the rescue – to all intents and purposes.

What a great mix of materials and furniture

Towards the church situated on an idyllic place of San Juan, the Giri Café is immediately visible: in front of the door of an old, ibizan townhouse, elegant wicker furniture instead of cheap plastic chairs invite to stay and to chill. Inside the Giri Café itself you’ll find modern architecture, different, small rooms with cosy seating corners, a successful mix of materials and furniture. Great drinks and cocktails are being mixed at the bar – who would have thought that?

The actual highlight – besides the extraordinarily good cuisine – is the bordering garden with additional comfy seats, daybeds and a children’s corner (in hay!), which is atmospherically illuminated in the evening. Here one will experience real holiday happiness at the latest.

The interior partly documents that the owner of the Giri Café is Danish, as it seems pretty Nordic. Rosa came as a child through her hippie parents on the island, where she’s living with her own family for 15 years now. Everything started with a beautiful boutique-hotel, The Giri Residence. The idea of The Giri Café developed in order to host the guests appropriate. By the way Giri – el guiri – actually stands for ‘foreigner’, ‘stranger’, which Rosa – whose children grow up on Ibiza – is not at all anymore.

The Giri is more than only a café that offers breakfast and lunch. There, friendly staff is serving modern, Mediterranean cuisine of highest standards with fresh ingredients from the region. A lot is handpicked in the own bio garden, in which herbs, salads, strawberries, tomatoes and other vegetables and fruits are being grown. Here I like to sit with a glass of Rosé – my favourite is the “Ibiskus” – and can hardly believe my luck.  BvH

First of all, I love, love, love Paris! The “savoir de vivre“, the elegance of the city and its inhabitants, the cultural offerings have already fascinated me when I lived in Paris as “Au Pair” years ago. One of my favorite places in Paris is in the heart of Saint-Germain-Près: The boutique hotel “Lebellechasse”. The 33 rooms created by fashion designer Christian Lacroix afford a lavish elegance with rich brocade fabrics, heavy velvet and creative murals that invite you to dream: Lacroix chose a great material-mix for the equipment of this four-star hotel in the seventh arrondissement.

The standard rooms are small – but nice

As everywhere in the French capital, the rooms are very small and even in a double room you have to be very well organized, to not step on your own feet. Still, I’m happy here and this is not only because of the central location. Institutions such as the “Café de Flore” on the Boulevard Saint Germain are within walking distance, as is the nearest metro station “Solferino”. The RER (line C) is diagonally opposite the hotel, right at the Musée D’Orsay. The other side of the Seine – the Louvre and the Rue de Saint Honoré – are easily accessible from here.

However, I do not really like the breakfast rooms in the basement. I prefer the small cafés and brasseries in the quarter, which are more individual and also cheaper – and much more “typiquement français”.

Tip:

I was positively surprised when I booked my room directly on the hotel’s website, where I found the best deals and prices.

How about a welcome drink at the bar?

Did I ever mention that I was working as a flight attendant for Deutsche Lufthansa years ago? I started on short distances flights on B737, followed by worldwide trips on Jumbojet later on. One of my favourite destinations was Tel Aviv and a real adventure those days. Meanwhile things have changed and I was really excited when I had the chance to visit this fascinating city again recently.

I fell completely in love with Tel Aviv when I went there a couple of month ago. While organizing the trip, many questions popped up and I really had no idea about the dimensions of this buzzling city, where to go and where to stay. So I decided for a boutique hotel, located on the corner of the famous Ben Yehuda Street and close to almost everything – even to the one of the best beaches of Tel Aviv, the Frishman Beach. The Mendeli Street Hotel – a 66-room establishment on a quiet side street – is only a two minute walk away from the beach. It opened already in the 1960s as the Adiv Hotel, and since than it is family-run. Four years ago, the owner family decided to renovate the entire building – an endeavor that took until now.

The result is a feast to the eyes: The Mendeli Street Hotel presents itself as a modern, stylish facility that is both sleek and homey, with careful attention paid to every detail. Stressing light and airy surroundings with cosy seating areas on attractive wood furnishings and hardwood floors, the hotel entices guests to be seduced by their surroundings.

The attention to details is evident in every aspect of the hotel’s service, from a warm welcome at the front desk to a personal escort by a staff member to the room. Everything in the rooms is pristine, tasteful and contemporary. Make sure to book a Superior room, because the Standard rooms are pretty small. For that the bathroom in the Deluxe room is spacious and luxurious, featuring the largest shower space I have ever seen. But the real highlight of the Mendeli’s has nothing to do with sleeping: It’s the breakfast.

It’s by far the best breakfast I have ever had – served in the large, open dining area by a friendly staff, who serves freshly squeezed juice and any beverage of your choice. You can order all kinds of egg dishes and combine it with innovative salads of greens or fresh fruit, a whole section of goat cheese and goat milk products, including bottles of yogurt, some with strawberries or raspberries, accompanied by individually wrapped packages of homemade granola. Don’t miss the fresh tartes, strudels and doughnuts. Conclusion: Here no wishes remain unfulfilled – I swear! BvH

A boutique hotel on the ‘wrong’ site of the Rhine that additionally has put its main focus on art? Well, what a peculiar combination. Precisely therefore Johannes Adams decided to set up his boutique hotel ‘New Yorker’ in Cologne-Deutz, a former industrial quarter in the late 90s, when there wasn’t even normal street lightning. The world is made for the brave, Adams thought and simply started.

“If I invite guests for private events, I like to mix people from Dusseldorf and Cologne”, says Hotel Manager Johannes Adams. “The perfect mixture for an inspiring evening.”

The studied architect, who had lived in New York for many years always wanted to create a hotel – ‘The rough road to New York’ how an article 15 years ago had put it so adequately. As a reminder of his time in the Big Apple he has named his 40-room design hotel ‘The New Yorker’, which also includes 20 apartments as well as eight conference rooms and two event locations. And because perfectionist Adams couldn’t find the right manager, he became the hotelier himself.

Native-born Rhinelander Johannes J. Adams was fascinated with the aura of the former factory quarter in Deutz-Mülheim right away. “Here the first four-stroke engines have been build, sugar cubes were invented, and the suspension railway developed. And we were among the first to understand the creative vibe of the quarter.” Adams explains to me.

‘Enjoy the difference’ is Johannes Adams’ credo, who lives and works in ‘tough’ Cologne. And that is how he filled the old hotel building with modern spirit: “Modernity and factory architecture is a rare combination, that no new building can authenticate.” Of course modern art mustn’t be absent! Who travels for the ‘Art Fair’ from 24th to 27th September to the Rhine and stays at the nearby ‘The New Yorker’ is well prepared when it comes to inhaling the Rhine-Metropolis’ art sense. BvH

Just a stones throw away from the design hotel the old factory hall, that Johannes Adams discovered, refurbished and that since fall 2014 had become one of the coolest event locations in Cologne, is located: The ‘Harbour Club’ situated directly at the Mülheim harbour. The modern chandelier ‘Hope’ from Luceplan provides the perfect lighting

The charisma of the former factory building stayed intact after the refurbishment. In this listed hall one can celebrate on 600 square meters

1.) The Bar ‘Pepe’ in the Belgian Quarter: They have the largest selection of gin.
2.) ‚Törtchen Törtchen‘ or ‚Madame Miammiam‘: For sinfully delicious Sweets.

I am a real fan of Interior and nothing is more beautiful than setting up living spaces and decorating. Except writing perhaps. And who hasn’t had the dream: Designing a Finca in Ibiza or a house in another place in the world according to own ideas. Sometimes you need support for the planning and implementation of such projects and in Ibiza there is a truly great team of experts in terms of Interior: the designer of Ksar Living.

Cool – but not cold: a stone bathtub in a bathroom with a concrete look

For 12 years, the interior designer and architect Alberto Cortés Artero and his team offer an all-inclusive service – including landscaping. The former fashion designer discovered years ago his secret love – interior design – and aranges, since then, private houses, boutique hotels such as ‘The Giri Residence’ in San Juan, and restaurants around the globe. Preferably with an Asian-Moroccan touch.

A trip to the huge Ksar-showroom on road 733 to San Juan is in any case worth the time, even if you don’t own a Finca on the island. The Ksar inspires and you get great animations. Anyone who wants to can take one of the selected home accessories, that Alberto Cortés Artero has collected from all around the world, home: The own four walls can have a new look and I can have a nice memory of Ibiza.
